Finbarr Desmond Memorial Shield 2016-10-22 10:40:00

Finbarr Desmond Memorial Shield

On 15th of October Inniscarra U10s hosted a hurling competition in Ballyanly.  Aghada, Blackrock & Douglas were invited to play. Each club fielded three teams each. We had the GAA and community pitch booked to host the games. We had six referees from U16 & Minor teams to help manage the games (Liam Buckley, Callum Morris, Liam Doyle, Jamie O’Sullivan, Sam Doyle and Eddie O’Connor). It was a cumulative scoring that would decide the overall result with each club playing each other. There were over 120 players on the day which was a fantastic turn out with 35 from Inniscarra.

There was an early start for the coaches to line the pitches, set the goals and a team of helpers get the hall ready with all players’ parents providing sandwiches, cakes & biscuits. We divided the pitches into three sections. On the day points and goals all counted as 1 score.

The games were all very well played in great spirit by all clubs with even teams. It all came down to the last round of games to decide where the shield would go for 2016. While the scores were counted, all clubs were invited into Community centre.

Inniscarra won with some impressive scoring in the last set of games. Over 265 scores were recorded in all 9 matches on the day with Inniscarra scoring over 100. The shield was presented by Mrs Desmond to the Inniscarra team which then started some serious fun and songs.

This was the first experience the players had of playing in a competition and it was great to see how they operated as a team supporting each other on the field of play.

We would like to thank the clubs that took part on the day for travelling and providing such sporting entertainment. Thanks to Mrs Desmond, Inniscarra GAA, Inniscarra Community Centre, parents, coaches and most of all the players that took part in what will be remembered as a great day. We look forward to 2017 and many more days out.   Scarra Abu
