Teen Skills Camp

This year we ran our first Teen Skills Camp, running from the 10th to the 14th August. It was attended by almost 60 boys and girls, from the U13 to U 16 age groups, and we were lucky to have a dry and mostly sunny week. The focus of the camp was to develop the skill levels of the participants and the coaching officer appointed to implement this was Ger Murphy, Junior and U21 Hurling coach. Ger set out a detailed program of specific skills to be targeted each day in hurling, football and camogie. He was assisted by three experienced juvenile coaches in Liam Collins, Tomás O’Connor and Paul Farmer. Each day, there were visiting coaches including Aine Murray, who has a Masters in Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, Cork players Brian O’Driscoll, Hannah Looney, Conor Lehane, Alan Cadogan and Cormac Murphy. Further expertise came from sessions with Donal O’Callaghan and Alan Sheehan, Inniscarra Intermediate players, Rob Lotty (Cork and Coachford Sec. School Camogie coach) and Don Hennessy, Club Coaching officer.  Players showed good interest and attention to the coaches, and many remarked on the high standard of skill and quality of players in both clubs. While the ice-cream van was replaced with a handout on Nutrition, nevertheless all seemed to enjoy the week and seemed to get good value from it. Many thanks to the participants for taking a chance on a new venture by the club, the club coaches who strongly encouraged their players to attend, the coaches who assisted with training and special thanks to Ger Murphy who ran a very professional camp for the week.
